Hari Varešanović's Early Life and Music Journey
Hari Varešanović was born in 1961 in Sarajevo. He was the second child of his parents, Reufik and Zlata. Hari grew up in the Vratnik area of Sarajevo's old town. His grandfather, Mehaga Varešanović, was a famous singer of traditional Bosnian music called sevdalinka.
Hari started singing and learning to play the guitar when he was just six years old. He performed at his local cultural center. When he was ten, he sang with a group called "Omi." Later, he joined another group named "Sedam šuma." In his hometown of Vratnik, Hari recorded his very first song, "Zašto da ne uzmem nju."
Joining Music Groups
In 1976, Hari joined a group called Zov. With them, he recorded a hit song titled "Poletjela golubica sa Baščaršije." After Zov, Varešanović sang with the group Ambasadori. Many people say that he truly grew into a professional artist during his time with Ambasadori.
After finishing his required military service, Hari began his solo music career. He released his first solo album, Zlatne Kočije, in 1984.
Hari Varešanović's Career Highlights
Hari Varešanović has had a long and successful career, lasting over 25 years. He has performed in more than 1,000 concerts.
Eurovision Song Contest Attempts
In 1999, Hari Varešanović tried to represent Bosnia and Herzegovina at the Eurovision Song Contest 1999. He performed his song "Starac i More." Although his song won the national selection, it was later found that the song had already been released. Hari had sold the song to a record company in Finland, and a Finnish artist had recorded it in 1997. Because of this rule, Hari Mata Hari was disqualified. Another Bosnian singer, Dino Merlin, went to Eurovision instead.
In 2006, Hari Varešanović got another chance to represent Bosnia and Herzegovina. On February 9, 2006, the Bosnian TV network PBSBiH announced that he would perform the song "Lejla." The music for "Lejla" was written by Serbian composer Željko Joksimović. The lyrics were written by Bosnian writer Fahrudin Pecikoza and Serbian writer Dejan Ivanović.
Hari Varešanović was very excited about the song. He told a Bosnian newspaper that he thought "Lejla" was "the best in the world." He felt that the song truly captured the spirit of the Bosnian people. On May 20, 2006, Hari Varešanović and his group Hari Mata Hari achieved third place at the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 in Athens, Greece. This was a great achievement for them!
