Hari's Early Life and Music Journey
Hari Varešanović was born in 1961 in the city of Sarajevo. His father, Reufik, was a mechanic, and his mother, Zlata, was a cashier. He grew up in the old part of Sarajevo called Vratnik. Hari's grandfather, Mehaga Varešanović, was a famous singer of traditional Bosnian music called sevdalinka. This type of music is very special to Bosnia.
Hari started singing and learning guitar when he was just six years old. He performed at his local community center. By age ten, he was singing with a group called "Omi." Later, he joined another group named "Sedam šuma." While still in Vratnik, Hari recorded his very first song, "Zašto da ne uzmem nju."
In 1976, Hari joined a group called Zov. With them, he recorded a popular song titled "Poletjela golubica sa Baščaršije." After Zov, Varešanović sang with the group Ambasadori. Many say that his time with Ambasadori helped him become a professional artist. After finishing his required military service, he started his solo music career. His first solo album, Zlatne Kočije, came out in 1984.
Hari's Career Highlights
Hari Varešanović has been a professional musician for over 25 years. He has performed in more than 1,000 concerts.
Eurovision Song Contest Attempts
In 1999, Varešanović hoped to represent Bosnia and Herzegovina at the Eurovision Song Contest 1999. He performed his song "Starac i More" (The Old Man and the Sea). His song won the national competition.
However, it was discovered that the song had already been released. Varešanović had sold the song to a record company in Finland. A Finnish artist named Janne Hurme recorded it in 1997 under the name "Heart Blood" ("Sydänveri"). Because of this, Hari Mata Hari was not allowed to compete. Instead, the singer Dino Merlin, who came in second, was sent to Eurovision that year.
Hari Varešanović got another chance to represent Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2006. On February 9, 2006, the Bosnian TV network PBSBiH announced he would perform the song "Lejla."
The music for "Lejla" was written by Serbian composer Željko Joksimović. The lyrics were written by Bosnian writer Fahrudin Pecikoza and Serbian writer Dejan Ivanović. Hari Varešanović was very excited about the song. He told a Bosnian newspaper that he thought "Lejla" was "the best in the world." He felt it truly captured the spirit of his people.
On May 20, 2006, Hari Varešanović and his group Hari Mata Hari competed at the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 in Athens, Greece. They achieved an impressive third place!
Working with Other Artists
In 1999, Hari recorded a duet with another famous Bosnian singer, Hanka Paldum. Their song, "Crni snijeg" (Black Snow), was on her album Nek' je od srca. Later that same year, Serbian singer Ceca covered the song on her album Ceca 2000.
Hari also worked with the popular Bosnian singer Lepa Brena. In 2011, he composed the music and wrote the lyrics for her song Briši me. This song was part of her sixteenth studio album, Začarani krug. He also wrote the lyrics for her 2014 song Zaljubljeni veruju u sve.
