Harker Canyon is a natural valley located in Lincoln County, Washington, USA. It was created by a small stream, called a tributary, that flows into the Spokane River. This part of the Spokane River is also known as the Spokane Arm of Franklin D. Roosevelt Lake. A small section of Harker Canyon, where it meets the Spokane River, is part of the Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area. However, most of the canyon is privately owned land.

Geography of Harker Canyon

Harker Canyon stretches for about 5.6 miles (9.0 kilometers). It runs in a general direction from north-northeast to south-southwest. The canyon opens up into the Spokane River at its northern end, which is about 1,350 feet (410 meters) above sea level. The highest point of the canyon, at its southern end, is around 2,720 feet (830 meters) above sea level.

The top of the canyon is less than 0.6 miles (1 kilometer) from where State Route 25 crosses Teel Hill. You can reach the northern part of the canyon using Harker Canyon Road. This road connects with State Route 25 about 4 miles (6.5 kilometers) north of the town of Davenport.

Wildfires in the Canyon

Harker Canyon has experienced several wildfires over the years, especially in the late 1900s and early 2000s. A wildfire is a large, uncontrolled fire that spreads through forests or other natural areas. For example, a wildfire burned about 1,566 acres (634 hectares) in the canyon between August 10 and August 15, 2005. Fighting this fire cost an estimated 1.0 million USD.

Many of the homes in Harker Canyon are cottages or vacation houses. People often use these homes for fun activities during the spring, summer, and fall. Some families live in the canyon all year round. Real estate ads often mention that the canyon is close to the town of Davenport, which is convenient for residents.
