What is the Victoria Cross?

The Victoria Cross, often called the VC, is a very special medal. It is the highest award for bravery a soldier can get. It is given to people in the British and Commonwealth armed forces. They receive it for showing amazing courage when facing the enemy. It is a very rare and respected award.

Bravery in World War I

On April 11, 1917, Lance-Corporal Mugford was in Monchy-le-Preux, France. There was heavy enemy fire all around. He moved his machine-gun to a very forward position. This spot was very exposed, meaning it was easy for the enemy to see him. From this dangerous place, he fought against the enemy very well.

Facing Danger

Almost immediately, the soldier helping him was killed. Lance-Corporal Mugford himself was badly wounded. He was told to move to a safer spot. He was also ordered to get his wounds treated. But he refused to leave his post. He stayed with his gun, causing a lot of damage to the enemy.

Never Giving Up

Soon after, a shell exploded near him. This shell broke both of his legs. Even with such severe injuries, he still stayed with his machine-gun. He kept fighting until he was finally taken to a medical station. On the way there, he was wounded again. His actions that day showed amazing bravery and determination.
