History of Harrisburg
Before trains came to Lincoln County, mail was delivered by a stagecoach. This stagecoach went to the home of Johnson Harris. He named the local post office Harrisburg, after himself.
The city's history truly began on August 1, 1879. This was when the first train arrived in the area. The train traveled from Sioux City, Iowa, to Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The post office moved to a different spot, about a mile south of where Harrisburg is now. It was called Salina for a while. This name honored Mrs. Jim Stillwell, an early settler and a respected teacher.
Finally, in 1890, the train station (depot) moved to its current location. The post office went back to its first name, Harrisburg. That's how the town of Harrisburg was officially born!
One of the first businesses in Harrisburg was the State Bank. It operated from about 1901 to 1945. The bank building is still standing in its original spot at 101 Railroad Ave. It was built in 1899 and was fixed up in 2006. Today, a construction company owns it. There's a popular story that a famous old-time bandit, John Dillinger, once tried to rob the bank. People say he even fired a shot into the counter as he left. That bullet hole is supposedly still there today!
