Exploring Harrison's Past
The Harrison neighborhood started to grow and become a distinct community in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Many of the first people to live here were Finnish Americans.
Harrison's "Finn Town" Era
From about 1900 to 1960, a large part of the Harrison neighborhood was commonly known as 'Finn Town'. This name came from the many Finnish families who lived there. Over time, Harrison changed. By the 1960s, it became a very diverse neighborhood with people from many different backgrounds and cultures.
Prince's Childhood Home
Did you know that the famous American musician Prince lived in the Harrison neighborhood when he was a child? He lived in two different homes here.
- From around 1970 to 1972, Prince lived with his father at 1707 Glenwood Avenue.
- Later, from about 1972 to 1974, he lived with his father at 539 Newton Avenue North.
Even after Prince became a world-famous artist, he continued to visit his father at the house on Newton Avenue North. This house was still owned by Prince Rogers Nelson (Prince's full name) when he passed away.
