The Harrison–Landers House was an old, important house near Newtown, Ohio, in the Hamilton County area of the United States. It was built a long time ago, between 1815 and 1825. This house was designed in the Federal style, which was popular back then. Even though much of its history is not fully known, it was recognized as a historic site in the 1970s.

What Was the Harrison–Landers House?

The Harrison–Landers House was a historic building. It was built by a person named P. Harrison. The house was made of brick and showed many features of the Federal style. This style was common for buildings in the early 1800s.

Design and Features

The house had special design elements. These included chimneys on the ends of the roof, which are called gables. It also had a unique fan-shaped window above the main entrance, known as a fanlight. The windows had brick lintels above them. The main door was surrounded by a brick archway.

In its early days, the house had fancy fireplace mantels and cupboards. However, by the 1930s, these beautiful parts had been taken out. This happened because an owner at that time did not care about the house's history.

How the House Was Used

The builder, Mr. Harrison, was connected to a well-known person in early Newtown. This was Nathaniel Armstrong, who owned a mill. Later, Armstrong's family owned a carding mill in Newtown. For some time, the house was even called the "Armstrong Mill."

A Place for Travelers

Not much is known about how the house was used long ago. People who studied the house in the 1930s could only find a few local sources of information. It seems the house was used for business. It was located on the road between Newtown and Plainville. Farmers often used this road to take their animals to market. The house became a place where travelers could stop. It was used as a tavern, offering a place to rest and eat. Later, by the end of the 1900s, it had become a boarding house. This meant it offered rooms for people to stay in for a short time.

A Historic Landmark

In 1975, the Harrison–Landers House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important historical buildings in the United States. The house got its name because the Landers family lived there in the 1930s.

Why It Was Important

The house was chosen for this list because of its special architecture. Its Federal style was very similar to another historic house. This was the James Whallon House in Greenhills. Sadly, even with this important recognition, the house could not be saved. The Harrison–Landers House has since been torn down.
