Harriston's History
How Harriston Got Its Name
Harriston was named after a person named General Nathaniel H. Harris. He was an important person who was the first president of the Vicksburg & New Orleans Railroad. The very first people to settle in Harriston were James Lowe and E. R. Jones.
Early Days of the Community
Harriston was built along the path of the old Illinois Central Railroad. The community officially became a town in 1886. This is called being "incorporated." It meant the community had its own local rules and government. Harriston also had a post office that opened in 1885.
Later, the town was "disincorporated." This means it stopped being an official town with its own government. The post office also closed down. We don't know the exact date when these changes happened.
Health Challenges in the Past
In the spring of 1896, Harriston faced a challenge. There was a smallpox outbreak that affected the community.
Two years later, in 1898, Harriston had another health problem. The community was put under "quarantine" because of a yellow fever outbreak. A quarantine means people are kept separate to stop a sickness from spreading.
