Harry Rowohlt facts for kids
Harry Rowohlt (born March 27, 1945 – died June 15, 2015) was a German writer and translator. He was also known for playing a character in the popular German TV show Lindenstraße.
About Harry Rowohlt
Harry Rowohlt was born Harry Rupp in Hamburg, Germany. His father, Ernst Rowohlt, was a famous publisher, and his mother, Maria Rowohlt, was an actress. They got married in 1957.
Harry Rowohlt became very well-known for his clever and funny translations of A. A. Milne's classic book, Winnie-the-Pooh. He also translated many other books into German for various authors. Some of these authors include Philip Ardagh, Donald Barthelme, Hilaire Belloc, Leonard Cohen, Ernest Hemingway, and Kurt Vonnegut. He even translated the Mr Gum book series by Andy Stanton.
His translation work was highly praised. In 1999, he won the Johann-Heinrich-Voß-Preis für Übersetzung, which is a special award for translators. Later, in 2005, he received the Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis, an award for German youth literature, for his excellent translations.
