The Harry S Truman Birthplace State Historic Site is a special place in Lamar, Missouri. It protects the small, one-and-a-half-story house where Harry S. Truman was born. He later became the 33rd President of the United States. This historic site is looked after by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.

Harry S Truman's Childhood Home

Harry S. Truman was born in this house on May 8, 1884. He was born in the downstairs bedroom on the southwest side of the house. The house itself was built around 1881.

Preserving History

The state of Missouri bought the house in 1957. Two years later, in 1959, it was officially opened as a historic site. Harry S. Truman himself attended the ceremony! In 1969, the site was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's recognized as an important historical place in the United States.
