Harry Theophilus Toulmin (born March 4, 1838 – died November 12, 1916) was an important judge in the United States. He served as a federal judge for the Southern District of Alabama. This means he worked for the national government, not just the state.
Becoming a Lawyer and Soldier
Harry Toulmin was born in Mobile County, Alabama. He studied law to become a lawyer. He passed his exams in 1860.
After becoming a lawyer, he started his own law practice in Mobile, Alabama. This means he worked for himself, helping people with legal issues.
From 1861 to 1865, he served as a Colonel in the Confederate States Army. After the war, he went back to being a lawyer in Mobile.
Serving in Alabama's Government
Toulmin also worked in Alabama's state government. He was a member of the Alabama House of Representatives from 1870 to 1872. This is where state laws are made.
Later, he became a judge for different parts of Alabama. He was a judge for the 6th Judicial Circuit from 1874 to 1880. Then, he became a judge for the 1st Judicial Circuit from 1880 to 1882. These changes happened because the court areas were reorganized.
Becoming a Federal Judge
In 1886, President Grover Cleveland chose Harry Toulmin to be a federal judge. This was for a new judge position created by a law.
The United States Senate approved his nomination on January 13, 1887. He officially became a judge that same day. He served as a federal judge until he passed away on November 12, 1916, in Toulminville, Alabama.
