History of Hartland
People first started living in the Hartland area around the year 1800. It officially became a town on February 17, 1820. Back then, it was called Warrentown or Warrenton. Hartland was the very last town in Maine to become official while Maine was still part of Massachusetts. This happened just before Maine became its own state.
The town got its first library books in 1903. They were kept in the town hall. From 1935 to 1990, the library was on Commercial Street. Today, that building is an outlet store. In 1991, the library moved to its current spot. In 1995, a local tannery made a donation. This helped the library add more space for a community room and a special area for kids' books.
The Hartland Public Library is a special place for everyone in town. It has over 35,000 books and seven computers for people to use. The library also has a meeting room for community events. Its main goal is to collect and share books and other materials that the community needs.
