Hasan Polatkan (born in 1915, died in 1961) was an important Turkish politician. He served as the Minister of Labor and later as the Minister of Finance. His political career ended after a major event in 1960, and he passed away in 1961.

Who Was Hasan Polatkan?

Hasan Polatkan was a key figure in Turkish politics during the 1950s. He was known for his work in government, especially in managing the country's money. His life story is an important part of Turkey's modern history.

Early Life and Education

Hasan Polatkan was born in 1915 in Eskişehir, which was then part of the Ottoman Empire. His family had roots in the Crimean Tatar community.

He was a bright student and went on to study political science at Istanbul University. After finishing his studies in 1936, he started working at Ziraat Bank, a state-owned bank, as an inspector. This job helped him understand how the country's finances worked.

A Career in Politics

Polatkan decided to enter politics and was elected to the Turkish Grand National Assembly in 1946. He represented his hometown of Eskişehir for the Democratic Party. He continued to be elected in the general elections of 1950, 1954, and 1957.

He became a trusted member of Prime Minister Adnan Menderes's government. Polatkan first served as the Minister of Labor from May to December 1950. After that, he became the Minister of Finance twice. His first term as Finance Minister was from December 1950 to December 1955, and his second was from December 1956 to May 1960. He played a big role in managing Turkey's economy during these years.

His time in government ended when the Turkish Armed Forces took over the government in a coup d'état on May 27, 1960. This event changed the course of Turkish politics.

Historical Events and Aftermath

After the 1960 coup, Hasan Polatkan was arrested along with Prime Minister Menderes and other government members. They faced serious accusations and were put on trial at the Yassıada trials.

Hasan Polatkan was found responsible for certain actions during his time in office. He passed away on September 16, 1961, on the island of İmralı. Many years later, in 1990, his remains were moved to a special memorial in Istanbul, along with those of Adnan Menderes and Fatin Rüştü Zorlu.

Hasan Polatkan was survived by his wife, Mutahhare Polatkan, and their daughter, Nilgün Polatkan.
