The Hasmonean Dynasty's Story
A Fight for Control
After Queen Salome Alexandra died in 67 BCE, her two sons started fighting. Hyrcanus II and Aristobulus II both wanted to rule Judah. Hyrcanus had the support of a man named Antipater. Antipater was the father of Herod the Great.
Roman Involvement
The Romans got involved in this family fight. A famous Roman general named Pompey supported Hyrcanus. Aristobulus gave up to the Romans. He was sent to Rome, where he was later killed.
The End of the Dynasty
In 40 BCE, the Parthian Empire invaded Judah. They were joined by Antigonus II, who was Aristobulus's son. They captured Hyrcanus. The Romans then made Antipater's son, Herod, the new king of Judea. The Romans defeated the Parthians. They also captured and killed Antigonus. He was the last ruler from the Hasmonean dynasty.
