Exploring Havasu Falls

Havasu Falls is about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) from the small village of Supai. It is the most famous and most visited waterfall along Havasu Creek. The water plunges from a high cliff, about 90 to 100 feet (27 to 30 meters) down, into several clear pools below.

Why the Water is Blue-Green

The water in Havasu Falls has a lot of a mineral called calcium carbonate. This mineral gives the water its amazing blue-green color. It also helps create natural rock formations called travertine dams around the falls. These dams form unique pools and steps in the water.

The Changing Look of the Falls

Over time, the appearance of Havasu Falls has changed many times. This is mostly due to powerful flash floods. Before a big flood in 1910, the water flowed in a wide, continuous sheet. Back then, it was known as Bridal Veil Falls. The narrow opening where the water flows today first appeared after that 1910 flood. Since then, the falls have changed shape several times. Today, the water flows as one main stream. In the past, it sometimes flowed as multiple streams or a wider sheet.

Fun Things to Do at Havasu Falls

There are many picnic tables on the other side of the creek, which you can reach by walking along the edges of the pools. You can even swim behind the waterfall and find a small cave-like area. It's important to be very careful when swimming here.

If you are hiking to Havasu Falls, remember to bring your own drinking water. There is no water available from the trailhead parking lot until you reach Supai Village. In Supai, you can find a general store and a cafe where you can buy food and drinks.
