The Havelock River is a cool river found in the beautiful country of New Zealand. It's an important part of the natural landscape there.

Havelock River: A New Zealand Waterway

The Havelock River starts its journey high up in the mountains. Its source is in the Cloudy Peak Range. This mountain range is part of the larger Southern Alps, which are famous for their stunning peaks and glaciers. The river begins its flow between two notable mountains called Sceptre Peak and Outram Peak.

Where Does It Go?

As the Havelock River flows, it eventually joins a bigger river called the Rangitata River. The Rangitata River then continues its path until it reaches the sea. It empties into a large bay known as the Canterbury Bight. This bay is located along the coast between the towns of Ashburton and Temuka.

How Did the River Get Its Name?

The Havelock River was named a long time ago by a famous explorer and geologist named Sir Julius von Haast. He explored many parts of New Zealand. He gave the river its name on March 12, 1861. Sir Julius von Haast chose to name it after Sir Henry Havelock. Sir Henry Havelock was a British general, which means he was a high-ranking leader in the British army.
