Havillah, Washington facts for kids
Havillah is a small community in northeastern Okanogan County, Washington. It's not a city with its own government, but a quiet place where people live. Havillah is about 18 miles south of the Canada-US border. About 300 to 400 people live in and around Havillah.
History of Havillah
People started settling in Havillah in the early 1900s. Many families moved there from the central United States. Some of their great-grandchildren still live and farm there today.
Climate and Farming
Havillah is high up, about 3,500 feet (1,067 meters) above sea level. This means it has a dry climate and cold, snowy winters. Because of the weather, farming can only happen during certain times of the year.
Farmers in Havillah raise animals like cattle and sheep. They also grow crops such as wheat, oats, barley, and hay. Most of these crops depend on snow and rain for water, as there isn't much irrigation. Many people who farm or raise animals in Havillah also work in nearby towns like Tonasket or Oroville. These towns are about 20 miles away.
Community Life and Fun
The Immanuel Lutheran Church, started in 1905, is a central place for the community. People go there for church services and other events.
Sitzmark Ski Hill is a popular spot for winter fun. It was started by local families in the mid-1900s. People also enjoy hunting, hiking, skiing, boating, and fishing in the area. Havillah is close to the Okanogan–Wenatchee National Forest and the Pasayten Wilderness, which offer many outdoor activities.
Havillah does not have stores or other services, except for the church.
