A. splendens var. atollensis (H.St.John) Govaerts

The Achyranthes atollensis, also known as the Hawaiʻi chaff flower, was a special type of plant that once grew only in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. It belonged to the Amaranthaceae family, which includes many different kinds of plants. Sadly, this unique plant is now extinct, meaning it no longer exists anywhere in the world. It was last seen in 1964.

What Was the Hawaiʻi Chaff Flower?

The Hawaiʻi chaff flower was a perennial shrub. This means it was a woody plant that lived for many years, not just one season. It grew in dry, sandy areas, especially on atolls. Atolls are ring-shaped islands made of coral. The sand where it grew was often "calcareous," which means it was made from things like shells and corals.

Where Did It Live?

This plant was endemic to the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. This means it was found naturally only in that specific part of the world and nowhere else. Its home islands included Kure, Midway, Laysan, and the Pearl and Hermes Atoll. These islands provided the perfect sandy shores and dry shrublands for the Hawaiʻi chaff flower to thrive.

Why Did It Disappear?

The Hawaiʻi chaff flower became extinct because of two main reasons: its habitat was destroyed, and new, non-native species were brought to its home. These changes made it impossible for the plant to survive.

Habitat Loss and Development

The biggest problem for the Hawaiʻi chaff flower was the loss of its natural home. People started building on the islands where it lived. This included creating places for people to live, businesses, and even military bases. When these developments happened, the sandy shores and shrublands where the plant grew were destroyed or changed too much.

New Species Caused Problems

Another reason the plant disappeared was the introduction of non-native species. These are plants or animals that were brought to the islands from other parts of the world. Sometimes, these new species can be harmful to the native plants. They might compete for space, water, or sunlight, or even introduce diseases that the native plants can't fight off. This competition and new threats made it even harder for the Hawaiʻi chaff flower to survive.
