Station History
When Hawthorn station first opened in 1861, it was the end of the train line. This means trains stopped there and turned around. It only had one platform, which is similar to Platform 1 today.
Expanding the Station
In 1882, another platform was built. This happened after the train line was made longer, reaching Camberwell. Later, in 1890, an island platform was added. This platform was built for a new train line that went to Kew, which is now closed. The roof over this platform came from the original Flinders Street station.
Track Upgrades
More changes happened in 1972. A third train track was added between Hawthorn and Burnley. This new track allows trains to travel in either direction. It helps express trains move faster during busy times. This upgrade completed a three-track system all the way to Box Hill.
Station Renovation
By the mid-1980s, the station was looking quite old and worn out. It had not been looked after for many years. In 1984, the government decided to give the station a big makeover. They approved $300,000 for the project. The renovation included repainting the station and fixing up the waiting room. They also repaired the platform roofs and improved the surrounding gardens. All these works were finished by May 1986.
Hawthorn station is also a special place because it is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. This means it is an important historical building.
