Discovering Hawthorne Hills

Where is Hawthorne Hills?

Hawthorne Hills is nestled in a nice part of Seattle. To the north, you'll find Northeast 65th Street. The southern and eastern edges are along Sand Point Way. On the west side, it's bordered by 40th Avenue Northeast. You can even see a sign for the neighborhood on Sand Point Way!

It has some cool neighbors too. To the north is View Ridge. To the east, you'll find Windermere. If you go south, you'll reach Laurelhurst. And to the west, there's Bryant.

A Bit of History

This neighborhood got its name from a person named Hawthorne Kingsbury Dent. He was a well-known insurance executive in Seattle a long time ago, in the early 1900s. He owned most of the land that is now Hawthorne Hills.

But before Mr. Dent sold his land in 1928, maps showed a different name for part of the area: Keith. This name came from Jacob Keith, an early settler who owned land there from 1880 to 1887. There was even a train stop called Keith Station. Today, that spot is part of the Burke-Gilman Playground Park.

What Makes it Special?

Hawthorne Hills is known for being a very nice place to live. In 2013, a study by Seattle Met Magazine and Zillow looked at 101 Seattle neighborhoods. Hawthorne Hills had one of the highest average incomes. It also ranked high for home values. Plus, it had the lowest crime rate among all the neighborhoods studied! This means it's a very safe and secure place for families.

Many streets in Hawthorne Hills have interesting names. They are often named after famous college towns, like Stanford, Princeton, and Purdue. These streets don't always follow the usual north-south or east-west pattern of Seattle.

Right in the middle of these streets is University Circle Park. From here, you can see amazing views of Downtown Seattle and the famous Space Needle. The southern part of the neighborhood also includes a section of the Burke-Gilman Trail. This trail is perfect for biking, walking, and running.
