View Ridge is one of Seattle's newer neighborhoods. It was first settled in 1936 by two people named Ralph Jones and Al Balch.

How View Ridge Started

Jones and Balch bought 10 acres (about 40,000 square meters) of forest land. This land is now part of the neighborhood. They cleared away trees to create the beautiful views of Lake Washington and the Cascade Mountains that you can see today. Then, they sold plots of land for homes. Their success helped them buy more land, expanding View Ridge to its current size.

Becoming Part of Seattle

View Ridge officially became part of the city of Seattle in 1942. View Ridge Elementary School started with temporary classrooms in 1944. The main school building was built in 1948.

Later Years in View Ridge

In the late 1980s, View Ridge experienced a series of unexplained fires. These events caused concern in the community.
