Sand Point's Historic Airfield

The Sand Point Airfield has a cool history! In 1924, it was the finish line for the first aerial circumnavigation of the world. This means a group of planes flew all the way around the Earth for the very first time. This amazing flight helped convince the government to turn Sand Point into a naval air station. A naval air station is like an airport for military planes. The station stopped operating in 1970.

  • Gordon Hirabayashi was a very important civil rights leader. He was born on April 23, 1918. His parents were farmers living near Lake Washington in the Sand Point area. During World War II, the United States government forced many Japanese Americans to move to special camps. Gordon Hirabayashi bravely spoke out against this. He believed it was unfair and against the U.S. Constitution. For his courage and work for justice, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012. This is one of the highest awards a civilian can get in the United States.
