Hayti (pronounced "HAY-tie") is a small town in Hamlin County, South Dakota, United States. It is the main town, or county seat, of Hamlin County. In 2020, about 393 people lived there. Hayti is also part of the larger Watertown, South Dakota area.
The name "Hayti" comes from an old tradition. People used to tie bundles of hay together to burn them on the wide-open prairie. This practice gave the town its unique name, "Hay-tie."

History of Hayti
Hayti was officially planned out in 1907. This happened when the South Dakota Central Railway built its tracks through the area. The railway helped the town grow.
In 1910, Hayti won an election to become the county seat. This meant it would be the main town for Hamlin County, taking the title from Castlewood. However, Castlewood went to court to keep the title and won that case.
But Hayti didn't give up! In 1914, there was a second election. This time, Hayti won again and officially became the county seat for good.
