Early Life and Education
Hazelle Rogers was born in Kingston, Jamaica. When she was 17 years old, in 1969, she moved to New York City. She went to New York City Community College and earned a degree in 1976. Later, in 1982, she moved to Florida. There, she became the Secretary of the Eastgate Homeowners Association.
She continued her education while working. In 2003, she graduated from the University of Phoenix with a degree in business.
Public Service in Lauderdale Lakes
Hazelle Rogers began her career in local government in 1996. She was elected to the Lauderdale Lakes City Commission. She served on the City Commission for several years. Her time there helped her understand the needs of her community. She continued in this role until she was elected to the state legislature.
Serving in the Florida House of Representatives
In 2008, Hazelle Rogers decided to run for the Florida House of Representatives. The person who held the seat before her, Matthew Meadows, could not run again. This was because of rules about how long someone can serve. She ran for the 94th District, which covered parts of Broward County.
During her campaign, she promised to help lower property taxes. She also wanted to make sure there was affordable housing for people in the community. She won the primary election against several other candidates. A primary election is when members of the same political party choose who will represent them. After winning the primary, she won the general election without anyone running against her.
She ran for re-election in 2010. She easily won the primary election again. She then won the general election without any opponents.
In 2011, while in the legislature, Hazelle Rogers worked on an important bill. This bill was about school dress codes. It asked school districts to create rules that would stop students from wearing clothes that showed too much. She believed this bill would help create better schools and more focused students.
In 2012, the areas that representatives served were changed. This is called redistricting. Hazelle Rogers was then placed in the 95th District. This new district included many of the same areas she had represented before. She won both the primary and general elections for this new district without any opposition.
Joining the Broward County Commission
In 2022, Hazelle Rogers decided to run for the Broward County Commission. She won the election in August 2022. This meant she took over the seat that was previously held by Dale Holness. She officially joined the Commission in November 2022.
Recognition
In 2020, Hazelle Rogers received a special award from the government of Jamaica. It was called the Order of Distinction. This award recognized her important work and achievements.
