North Lauderdale is a city located in Broward County, Florida, in the United States. It's a main city within the larger Miami metropolitan area. In 2020, about 44,794 people lived there.

North Lauderdale's History

When North Lauderdale was created in 1963, it was mostly farmland. It had open fields where cows and horses from the Anderson Dairy Farm grazed. It was also used for growing crops by the Lena Lyons Stringbean Farm.

Planning the City

A famous architect named Morris Lapidus helped plan North Lauderdale. He was known for designing big, fancy hotels in Miami Beach in the 1950s, like the Fontainebleau Resort. Lapidus wanted to create a "City of Tomorrow." His ideas can still be seen in the city's unique shapes and designs.

Early Development

In the late 1960s, a group called the Osias Organization bought most of the land. They started building homes in North Lauderdale. Colonel Nathan Rood, who led this group, also became the city's first appointed Mayor. In April 1969, Michael Saraniero was chosen as the first elected Mayor by a special vote.

A Growing Community

In the 1970s, many families moved to North Lauderdale because homes were affordable and it was close to the beach. People loved the warm weather in the Sun Belt region. Thousands of families moved in, and new neighborhoods quickly grew. North Lauderdale became known as a young, family-friendly place where people enjoyed spending time together, often playing softball after work. It was a city where hard work was rewarded with sunny weekends and family barbecues.
