Hearcel F. Craig, born on July 1, 1949, is an important politician from America. He currently serves as a Senator for the 15th District in the Ohio State Senate. Before becoming a Senator, Mr. Craig worked in different public service roles. He was in the United States Army and then worked for the Ohio Department of Youth Services. He also helped start City Year in Columbus, which is a program where young people serve their communities.

Mr. Craig earned a degree from Central Michigan University. In 2007, he was chosen to be a member of the Columbus City Council. While on the Council, he became the President Pro Tempore, a leadership role. Later, in 2014, he ran for the Ohio House of Representatives and won. He served two terms there before deciding to run for the Ohio State Senate in 2018. He won that election too and started his term as a Senator on January 6, 2019.

Hearcel Craig's Role in the Ohio State Senate

In 2018, instead of running for his old job again, Mr. Craig decided to try for a seat in the Ohio State Senate. The Senator who held that seat before him, Charleta Tavares, could not run again because of term limits. Term limits mean a person can only serve a certain number of times.

Mr. Craig won both the first election (called the primary) and the main election. He officially became a Senator on January 6, 2019. In 2021, his fellow Democratic Senators chose him for a leadership position. He was elected as the Assistant Minority Whip for the Ohio Senate Democratic group. This means he helps make sure his party's members vote together on important issues.
