Growing Up and School
Heather Hart was born in Seattle, Washington. Her dad, Harry H. Hart III, was a carpenter. Her parents met at an art school in Oakland. Heather grew up in North Seattle.
In 1998, she earned a degree in Painting and Video from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle. Later, in 2008, she received her master's degree from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. There, she focused on art that combines different types of media.
Her Art Career
Heather learned carpentry skills from her father when she was young. She uses these skills in her art. Her artwork often mixes building shapes with family stories and different viewpoints. She also likes her art to be interactive, meaning people can be part of it.
Rooftop Oracles
One of Hart's famous art series is called "Rooftop Oracles." These are life-sized rooftops that look like they've either fallen from the sky or are growing out of the ground. People can climb on top of them or go underneath them. This makes the art a fun experience. Heather often works with her family and friends to build these large pieces. It's like a community effort to "raise the roof" together.
- In 2010, she built "The Northern Oracle: We Will Tear the Roof Off the Mother." This was at Franconia Sculpture Park in Minnesota.
- In 2012, her sculpture "The Eastern Oracle: We Will Tear the Roof Off the Mother" was shown at the Brooklyn Museum.
- "The Western Oracle: We Will Tear the Roof Off the Mother" was at the Seattle Art Museum's Olympic Sculpture Park in 2013. This piece included a wall made of elk-hide drums. It was built to create sounds like an oracle.
- From May to November 2017, "Outlooks: Heather Hart" was displayed at Storm King Art Center in Mountainville, New York.
Black Lunch Table Project
Heather Hart is a co-founder of the Black Lunch Table Project. This project aims to collect and preserve important information about art and artists. It received a special grant in 2016. Heather started this project in 2005 with her friend and fellow artist, Jina Valentine.
The Black Lunch Table Project brings people together to talk about important topics. These include race, how history is recorded, and why there aren't enough minority artists in art history books. The project often holds "edit-a-thons" where people work together to add information about underrepresented artists to Wikipedia.
