Heather J. Hutt (born April 5, 1959) is an American politician. She currently serves as a councilmember for the 10th District of Los Angeles. She first took on this role temporarily in September 2022. Then, she was officially appointed to the position in April 2023. Before joining the City Council, she worked for Senator Kamala Harris.
Heather Hutt's Early Career in Politics
Heather Hutt began her political journey in 2011. She worked as a District Director for Assemblymember Isadore Hall III. A District Director helps a politician connect with people in their local area. They also help solve problems for the community.
In 2017, Hutt became a Regional Deputy Director for then-Senator Kamala Harris. This role meant she helped manage Senator Harris's work in a specific region. By 2019, she was promoted to California State Director for Senator Harris. This was a very important job, overseeing all of Harris's work across the state.
In 2021, Heather Hutt decided to run for a seat in the California State Assembly. This is a part of the state government that makes laws. She had support from many well-known politicians. Even though she didn't win that election, she gained valuable experience.
Serving on the Los Angeles City Council

In March 2022, Heather Hutt was chosen to be the chief of staff for District 10. A chief of staff is like a manager for a councilmember's office. They help run daily operations and manage the team. This was a special moment because she became the first African American woman to hold this chief of staff position in that district since 1973.
The council seat for District 10 became open because of serious issues involving the previous councilmember. Herb Wesson was appointed to fill the seat temporarily. When he could no longer serve, the Council President appointed Heather Hutt to be a "caretaker" for the district. This meant she would look after the district's needs until a permanent councilmember was chosen.
Many people in District 10 wanted Heather Hutt to have full voting power on the City Council. They felt their district needed a strong voice. After some discussions and votes, the City Council officially appointed her as a councilmember on September 2, 2022. This was a temporary appointment to fill the vacant seat.
In March 2023, the situation with the previous councilmember was resolved. Because her appointment was only for the temporary vacancy, Heather Hutt's role as councilmember ended. However, the City Council quickly re-appointed her. On April 11, 2023, she was voted back in to serve the rest of the term for District 10. She also announced her campaign to run for the seat in the next election.
