History of Hebron

Hebron has a rich history, with several important places listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Maple Leaf Farm Potato House, Spring Hill Church, St. Giles, and Western Fields.

The Railroad's Arrival

Hebron began to grow around 1890. This was when the Baltimore, Chesapeake and Atlantic Railroad built its tracks through the area. Before the railroad, Hebron was just a country road with a store and a few farms. The railroad created a shipping point, and the community was named Hebron, like the ancient biblical city.

Growth and Industry

Five years after the railroad arrived, a lumber factory opened in Hebron. This helped the small settlement grow into a busy town. Unlike older towns that grew near rivers, Hebron developed because of the railroad. Later, cars and better farm machines also helped the town expand.

By the 1920s, Hebron was a center for both farming and manufacturing. It was easy to send goods to big markets. In 1927, Hebron had five shirt factories, a flour mill, and a canning factory. There was also a lumber mill and a new high school being built.

Farming and Famous Farms

Farming was very important in Hebron. Farmers grew many crops like peaches, apples, strawberries, sweet potatoes, and watermelons. There were also large poultry (chicken) and dairy (milk) farms.

Some famous farms included B. Frank Adkins' Neighbor's Wonder Farm, known for its special cows. J.T. Insley owned the Oakdale Poultry Farm. James A. Phillips and James Gordy also had large farms.

Important Citizens

People like Walter B. Miller and G.A. Bounds helped build Hebron's manufacturing businesses. G.A. Bounds owned both a lumber mill and a canning plant. His house can still be seen on Main Street today.
