Hector McNeil (born 10 March 1907 – died 11 October 1955) was a Scottish politician. He was a member of the Labour Party. He worked hard for his country and community.

Hector McNeil's Life Story
Hector McNeil grew up in Scotland. He studied at Woodside School. Later, he went to the University of Glasgow. He trained to be an engineer. After that, he worked as a journalist. He wrote for a national newspaper in Scotland.
Early Political Career
Hector McNeil joined the Glasgow Town Council. He was a council member from 1932 to 1938. He also led the Glasgow Trades Council. This group helped workers.
He tried to become a Member of Parliament (MP) several times. He ran for election in 1929, 1931, 1935, and 1936. He was not successful in these early attempts.
In 1941, he finally became an MP. He was elected for Greenock. This happened during World War II. He was the only candidate, so he won easily.
Working for the Government
After the 1945 election, Hector McNeil got an important job. He became a junior minister for foreign affairs. This meant he helped with how Britain worked with other countries.
In 1946, he was promoted. He became the Minister of State at the Foreign Office. He was like the main helper to the Foreign Secretary. He also joined the Privy Council. This is a group of important advisors to the Queen.
He also worked with the United Nations. In 1947, he was a vice-president of the United Nations General Assembly. He also led the British team for the Economic Commission for Europe in 1948.
From 1950 to 1951, he had a very big job. He was the Secretary of State for Scotland. This meant he was in charge of many things for Scotland. He worked in the government of Clement Attlee.
Hector McNeil won his seat again in the 1955 election. But he sadly passed away soon after.
Remembering Hector McNeil
Hector McNeil was remembered in his community. Two places were named after him in Greenock.
Hector McNeil Memorial Baths
The Hector McNeil Memorial Baths was a swimming pool. It was named to honor Hector McNeil. His wife laid the first stone for the baths in 1963. The baths were used for many years. They were taken down in 2002. A new leisure center opened in Greenock.
Hector McNeil House
In 2014, another building was named after him. The old library building in Greenock became Hector McNeil House. It is now used for health and care services.
