Heichal Shlomo facts for kids

Heichal Shlomo (say "Hey-khal Shlo-mo") means 'Palace of Solomon'. It is an important building in Jerusalem, Israel. It used to be the main office for the Chief Rabbinate of Israel. This is like the highest religious authority for Jewish people in Israel.
Heichal Shlomo is next to the Great Synagogue. It is on King George Street in Jerusalem. Today, it is part of Herzog College. It also has a Jewish Heritage Center and a Museum of Jewish Art.
Building History
The building of Heichal Shlomo started in 1953. It was finished in 1958. A German architect named Alexander Friedman designed it.
Since 1992, the building has been home to the Jewish Heritage Center. It also houses the Jewish Art Museum.
What's Inside?
Inside Heichal Shlomo, you can find the Renanim Synagogue. This synagogue was brought all the way from Padua, Italy. It has a special Torah ark and bimah from the 1700s. The synagogue also has beautiful modern stained glass windows.
The Entrance Gallery often shows new art displays. These displays feature works by Israeli artists. The museum inside Heichal Shlomo is named after Sir Isaac Wolfson. He was a kind Jewish person from Britain who helped many causes. The museum shows both old and new Jewish art.
Important Visitors
In 2009, Pope Benedict XVI visited Heichal Shlomo. He met with the two Chief Rabbis of Jerusalem. This was a special meeting between important religious leaders.
