About Heleieth Saffioti's Life
Heleieth Saffioti was born in 1934 in a town called Ibirá in São Paulo, Brazil. Her mother was a seamstress, and her father was a mason.
Her Education and Early Work
In 1960, she finished her degree in Social Sciences at the University of São Paulo (USP). This is where she learned to study society and people.
That same year, she started researching the lives of women in Brazil. This research later became her important thesis, or big paper, for her PhD. It was called A mulher na sociedade de classe: mito e realidade (Woman in class society: myth and reality). She finished it in 1967, and it was published as a book in 1976.
The book became very popular and is still used today to study gender and women's roles. Heleieth's ideas were based on Marxism, a way of looking at society that focuses on how different groups of people have power. Because of a military government that had recently taken power in 1964, some people criticized her views. However, she is known worldwide for developing a special kind of "dialectical feminism," which combines ideas about social classes with women's rights.
Her Career as a Professor
Heleieth Saffioti taught at several universities. She was a professor at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC-SP) and a visiting professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).
At UFRJ, she helped create a special center to study gender, social class, and ethnicity. She also guided many students working on their own theses at PUC-SP. She retired from São Paulo State University (UNESP) in Araraquara, where she was given the special title of professor emeritus. This title is given to retired professors who are highly respected.
Even though she held many academic positions, she chose not to join many other organizations. She wanted to keep her "freedom of thought" and speak her mind freely.
Recognizing Her Contributions
In 2005, Heleieth Saffioti was part of a special group called "1000 Women for the Nobel Peace Prize." This project, organized by a Swiss group, aimed to recognize women from all over the world who worked for peace. Heleieth was one of 51 Brazilian women included in this important list.
Personal Life and Legacy
Heleieth Saffioti was married to Waldemar Saffioti, who was a physical chemist, a professor, and a writer of textbooks. He was also a councilor in Araraquara.
After her husband passed away in 2000, Heleieth decided to donate their farm in Araraquara to UNESP. The university turned it into a cultural center, which is a place for art and learning. She continued to be active in her work until the end of her life. Heleieth Saffioti passed away in 2010 at the age of 76 due to a condition called arteriosclerosis.
