Helen L. Phillips (born December 8, 1919, died July 27, 2005) was an amazing American singer. She was a type of singer called a soprano, known for her powerful and beautiful voice. Helen Phillips helped break down racial barriers, especially in concert halls and on the opera stage. This means she was one of the first Black singers to achieve great success in these areas.

Her Life Story

Early Life and Education

Helen L. Phillips was born in St. Louis, Missouri. Her father, Reverend James Phillips, was a Baptist minister. She went to Sumner High School in St. Louis. Later, she studied at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri. She also did advanced studies in music and sociology at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee.

Breaking Barriers in Music

Helen showed her talent from a young age. When she was just 14, she was a soloist at the opening of the Municipal Auditorium in St. Louis.

She made history by being the first Black singer to perform with the Metropolitan Opera chorus. This happened in 1947. It was seven years before another famous singer, Marian Anderson, made her debut there. Helen later said she just "slipped in." Her agent was asked to send the best soprano for a few shows of Cavalleria rusticana. Even though the stage manager was surprised by her race, he didn't stop her from performing.

Traveling the World

Helen Phillips traveled all over the world as a concert singer. She performed in the United States, Europe, Africa, and South America during the 1940s and 1950s. She was especially known for singing German Lieder (songs) and Negro spirituals.

She spoke German very well. After World War II, she toured Austria and West Germany for the U.S. State Department. She made her debut at Town Hall in New York City in 1953. In 1954, she was part of a City Center production of the musical Show Boat.

A Memorable Train Ride

Helen had many interesting stories from her travels. One time, she was on the Oriental Express train. She met two Russian soldiers who started saying bad things about the United States. They also talked about the struggles of Black people in America. During their talk, one soldier took her glasses and wouldn't give them back. When he tried to bother her, she bravely slapped him.

Later Life

After her singing career, Helen Phillips became a teacher and a vocal coach. She helped other singers develop their voices. She passed away at the age of 86 from heart disease. She died at the Isabella Geriatric Center in Manhattan.
