Helenwood's Past
Helenwood was first planned out in 1859. It was originally called "Homestead." People settled here because it was a good place for coal-mining. We don't know for sure how it got its current name, Helenwood.
A Big Event in 1935
On April 5, 1935, a large explosion happened in Helenwood. It destroyed fifteen homes and damaged many other buildings. News reports at the time said Helenwood was "literally wiped off the map." Luckily, no one was killed in the explosion.
Becoming a Town (and Not Quite)
In 1997, Helenwood tried to become an official town. This happened after the state of Tennessee changed some rules about how communities could become towns. These new rules made it easier for smaller places to incorporate. However, a state court later said these rule changes were not allowed. Because of this, Helenwood's plan to become a town was stopped. So, it remains an unincorporated community today.

Helenwood is located in the state of Tennessee. You can find it along U.S. Route 27, just north of Huntsville. It is part of Tennessee's Cumberland Plateau region, which is known for its flat-topped mountains and deep valleys.
The community covers an area of about 2.01 square miles (5.20 square kilometers). All of this area is land, with no large bodies of water.

- Harry Stonecipher was born in Helenwood and grew up there. He later became a very important person in the business world. He was the president and chief operating officer of Boeing, a huge airplane company, from 1997 to 2002.
