Helmut Erik "Helm" Glöckler (born January 13, 1909, died December 18, 1993) was a German amateur racing driver. He was born and passed away in Frankfurt am Main, Germany.
Helmut Glöckler's Racing Journey
Helmut Glöckler loved racing cars. In 1951, he raced a Deutsch-Bonnet car in a series called Formula 3. This was a type of racing for smaller, open-wheel cars.
He also won a special sports car racing event in 1953. This was at the Eifelrennen race, where he drove a brand new Porsche 550 car.
In 1951, Helmut also won the Alpine Cup trophy. He achieved this in a rally race called the Österreichische Alpenfahrt. He drove a specially changed Renault 4CV car.
Helmut tried to race in the 1953 German Grand Prix, which was a big Formula One event. He drove a Cooper car for a team called Equipe Anglaise. This was his only attempt at a World Championship race.
However, during the qualifying session, his car's engine broke down. Because of this, he could not compete in the main race.
If he had qualified, Helmut Glöckler would have been the first driver ever to use the number 0 in a Formula One race! This was twenty years before Jody Scheckter actually raced with number 0 in 1973.
Helmut also raced a Porsche 550 in the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans race. This is a very long endurance race. He raced there in 1953 with Hans Herrmann. He returned to Le Mans in 1954 with Richard von Frankenberg.
For many years, a company in Frankfurt called Helm Glöckler GmbH carried his name. This company was a motorcycle dealer and workshop.
Helmut's Family Connection
Helmut Glöckler had a cousin named Walter. In 1951, Walter created a small, open-top sports car powered by a Porsche engine. This special car actually gave the Porsche company an idea. It inspired them to create their famous Porsche 550 sports car later on.
