The Helsby War Memorial helps us remember the brave soldiers from Helsby who died fighting in the First World War. It was first shown to the public in 1920. Later, the names of those who died in the Second World War were added. You can find this memorial in the churchyard of St Paul's Church in Helsby, Cheshire, England. It's a Celtic cross made of sandstone, standing on a base with steps. The cross has a special message carved into it. The names of the soldiers are on the base. This memorial is officially recognized as a Grade II listed building because it's very important.
Where It Is and Its Story
The Helsby War Memorial stands in the churchyard of St Paul's Church. It is on a raised area that looks out over the A56 road. R. H. Lockwood designed the memorial. W. Heswall and Son built it. The people of the church paid for it, costing £350.
The memorial was first shown to the public on April 25, 1920. J. Taylor and Revd. E. W. Evans led the ceremony. After the Second World War, the names of those who died in that war were added. In 2005 and 2006, the memorial was repaired. This was done with help from the War Memorials Trust. In 2012, the local council made more improvements to it.
What It Looks Like
The memorial is made from sandstone. It is about 5 meters (16 feet) tall. It features a Celtic cross with a wide, narrowing shaft. The cross stands on a rectangular base. This base sits on three steps. The whole memorial is on a platform.
The front of the cross's round head and its shaft have detailed patterns. These patterns look like vines carved into the stone. A special message is carved on the front of the shaft. On the base, you can find the names of 20 soldiers who died in the First World War. There are also 17 names of those who died in the Second World War.
Why It's Important
The Helsby War Memorial became a Grade II listed building on September 13, 2016. Grade II is the lowest of three levels for listed buildings. It means the building is of "special interest."
