A Look at Hemiksem's History
The first time Hemiksem was mentioned was in the year 1155. Back then, it was called Hamincsem.
In 1246, a group of monks called Cistercians built St. Bernard's Abbey near the Scheldt river. These monks became the rulers of the area, which was known as a heerlijkheid (a type of landed estate). The land around Hemiksem used to be covered in thick forests.
The first factory for making bricks was built in 1358. However, Hemiksem was mostly a farming area until the 1800s. During the 19th century, more factories and businesses started to appear. This caused Hemiksem to grow and become more industrial.
What to See in Hemiksem
The most famous place to visit in Hemiksem is the St. Bernard's Abbey. This old building was built in the 13th century.
Today, the Abbey is no longer a monastery. After many updates and repairs, it now serves as the town hall and the police station for Hemiksem.
