History of Hendrix
How Hendrix Got Its Name
The town of Hendrix is named after James A. Hendrix. He owned a general store in the area.
The Railway and Kemp City
Originally, the town was known as Kemp City. This was because the Missouri, Oklahoma and Gulf Railway (MO&G) built a train line that went around the town of Kemp in 1908. People living in Kemp City wanted the train to stop there.
In 1910, residents asked the Oklahoma Corporation Commission to make the MO&G railway build a side track and a stop station in Kemp City. The commission is a state group that helps regulate businesses like railroads. The commission agreed with the residents.
However, the MO&G railway did not want to build the stop. They appealed the decision to the Oklahoma Supreme Court. This is the highest court in the state. In 1911, the Supreme Court agreed with the commission. This meant the railway had to build the stop in Kemp City.
