Henri-Guillaume Hamal (sometimes called Hamalle or Amael) was a talented musician, music director, and composer. He was born in Liège, which is now in Belgium, in 1685 and passed away there in 1752. He was the first well-known musician in the Hamal family, who were very important in the music scene of Liège during the 1700s.

Hamal spent his entire life in the Prince-Bishopric of Liège. This was a special area that was part of the Holy Roman Empire. It was ruled by a Prince-Bishop, who was a powerful leader. This region was often involved in wars between different countries, like France and the Dutch-British allies.

Early Life and Musical Training

Henri-Guillaume Hamal started his musical journey at a young age. He learned music from Lambert Pietkin, who was the maître de chapelle (music director) at Saint Lambert's Cathedral, Liège. Hamal was known for his amazing singing voice. People said he sang with grace, good taste, and a lot of feeling.

In 1708 or 1709, Hamal married Catherine Corbusier. They had six children together: five boys and one girl. Two of his family members also became musicians in Liège. His oldest son, Jean-Noël Hamal, and his grandson, Henri Hamal, followed in his musical footsteps.

Hamal's Musical Career

Around the time he got married, Hamal started working as a maître de musique (music master) at the Church of Our Lady in Sint-Truiden. This was an important town in the Prince-Bishopric. Later, he returned to Liège.

Back in Liège, he took on a role as sous-maîtrise de chapelle (assistant music director) at the cathedral. He eventually moved up to become maître de musique there. People who knew Hamal said he was a very honest and trustworthy person. He was well-liked and welcomed by important people in Liège society.

What Music Did He Write?

Henri-Guillaume Hamal wrote many different kinds of music. He mostly composed motets, which are pieces of music for voices, sometimes with instruments and sometimes without. He also wrote masses, which are musical settings of parts of a church service.

He created cantatas, which are vocal pieces with instrumental accompaniment. These cantatas were written in French, Italian, and even the local Walloon dialect. Hamal also composed other religious pieces, like a "Tantum ergo", a "Laudate pueri", and a "Te Deum".

Besides his formal compositions, Hamal was also good at making up funny songs on the spot. He would improvise these comic songs in different languages while playing the cello. Sadly, none of his musical works were ever printed. It seems that all of his original handwritten music has been lost over time.
