Henri Jules de Bourbon (born July 29, 1643, in Paris – died April 1, 1709, in Paris) was a French prince. He held the important title of Prince de Condé from 1686 until his death. Towards the end of his life, he faced mental health challenges.
Early Life and Family
Henri Jules was born in 1643 to Louis II de Bourbon, Prince de Condé. His father was a famous military leader. Henri Jules was five years younger than King Louis XIV of France. He was the only child who would inherit the huge Condé family wealth and properties. These included the Hôtel de Condé and the beautiful Château de Chantilly.
His mother, Princess Claire-Clémence de Maillé-Brézé, was a niece of the powerful Cardinal Richelieu. When he was born, he was known as the duc d'Albret. After his grandfather passed away, he became known as the duc d'Enghien. As a member of the royal House of Bourbon, he was a prince du sang, which meant he was a close relative of the King.
Personality and Marriage
Henri Jules was known to have a difficult personality throughout his life. He was described as having a very strong temper. It was often hard to disagree with him.
He was trained as a soldier and was put in charge of the Rhine front in 1673. However, he did not have the great military skills of his father. He received a good education, but his character was often described as unkind.
In December 1663, he married the German princess Anne Henriette of Bavaria in Paris. She was the daughter of Edward, Count Palatine of Simmern. Princess Anne Henriette was known for being very religious, kind, and generous. Many people at court admired her for being very supportive of her husband, even though he was often difficult.
Henri Jules and Anne Henriette had ten children together. Only half of them lived to become adults. Henri Jules also had an illegitimate daughter named Julie de Bourbon, who was officially recognized in 1693.
His Children
Henri Jules had several children with his wife, Anne Henriette. His only son, Louis de Bourbon, later became the next Prince of Condé after his father's death.
Some of his notable daughters included:
- Marie Thérèse de Bourbon, who became the Princess of Conti.
- Anne Marie Victoire de Bourbon, known as Mademoiselle de Condé.
- Anne Louise Bénédicte de Bourbon, who became the Duchess of Maine.
- Marie Anne de Bourbon, who became the Duchess of Vendôme.
