Marie Thérèse de Bourbon (born February 1, 1666 – died February 22, 1732) was a French princess. For a short time in 1697, she was known as the titular Queen of Poland. This means she was called Queen, but she didn't actually rule.
Marie Thérèse was the daughter of the Prince of Condé, a very important noble family in France. Because she was part of France's ruling House of Bourbon, she was called a princesse du sang, which means a princess of royal blood.

Her Early Life and Marriage
Marie Thérèse de Bourbon was born in Paris on February 1, 1666. Her parents were Henri Jules, Prince of Condé and Princess Anne Henriette of Bavaria. From the day she was born, she was known as Mademoiselle de Bourbon. She was named after the Queen of France at the time, Marie Thérèse of Austria, who was the wife of King Louis XIV of France.
Her family was a younger branch of the French royal House of Bourbon. On her mother's side, she was connected to English royalty.
Marie Thérèse was supposed to marry Emmanuel Philibert, Prince of Carignano from Italy. However, on January 22, 1688, she married François Louis, Prince of Conti. He was known as le Grand Conti and was the head of another younger branch of the House of Bourbon. Their wedding took place in the chapel at the Palace of Versailles.
Marie Thérèse was very much in love with her husband. She lived a quiet life, often staying at the Conti family homes, especially the Château de L'Isle-Adam. She was known for being a calm and very religious person.
Queen of Poland for a Short Time
In 1697, King Louis XIV of France offered Marie Thérèse's husband the Crown of Poland. Her husband, the Prince de Conti, traveled to Poland to see if he wanted to become king. Marie Thérèse stayed in France during this time.
While he was there, she was considered the titular Queen of Poland. This means she had the title, but not the power. Her husband was the most popular choice among the Polish nobility. However, when he arrived in Gdańsk, he found that Augustus II the Strong had already taken the throne. So, the Prince de Conti returned to France, and Marie Thérèse stopped being called Queen.
Life as a Dowager Princess
In 1709, Marie Thérèse's husband passed away in Paris. After his death, she became a "dowager" princess. This title is given to a widow of a prince. To tell different dowager princesses apart, they were given special titles like Madame la Princesse de Conti première douairière.
After her husband's death, she began to fix up the Conti family's Parisian home, the Hôtel de Conti.
In 1713, her daughter Marie Anne married Louis Henri, Duke of Bourbon. He was the son of her husband's former mistress. On the same day, her son, the new Prince de Conti, married Louise Élisabeth de Bourbon. Louise Élisabeth then took the title of Princess de Conti, which Marie Thérèse had held for nearly 30 years.
Marie Thérèse de Bourbon passed away on February 22, 1732. She was buried at the Église Saint-André des Arcs in L'Isle d'Adam.
Through her granddaughter, Louise Henriette de Bourbon-Conti, Marie Thérèse is an ancestor of several kings and queens who lived in Europe in the 1800s and 1900s, including Louis Philippe I, who was King of the French.
Her Children
Marie Thérèse de Bourbon and her husband had several children:
- Marie Anne de Bourbon (born April 18, 1689 – died March 21, 1720). She married Louis Henri, Duke of Bourbon but did not have any children.
- Louis Armand de Bourbon, Prince de Conti (born November 10, 1695 – died May 4, 1727). He married Louise Élisabeth de Bourbon-Condé and had children.
