Coaching Career Highlights

Henri Michel had a long and exciting career as a football coach. He managed many different national teams and clubs across the globe.

Coaching France

Michel led the French national team to great success. He guided the team to a gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics. This was a huge achievement for French football.

He also coached France at the 1986 FIFA World Cup. The team played very well, reaching the semi-finals. They finished the tournament in third place, which was an excellent result.

Coaching in Africa

Henri Michel spent a lot of his coaching career in Africa. He managed several national teams there, helping them compete in major tournaments.

Cameroon

In 1994, Michel took on the role of managing the Cameroon national team.

Morocco

Michel coached the Morocco national team twice. His first time was from 1995 to 2000. He returned for a second time in 2007. However, this second period was short. Morocco did not perform well in the Africa Cup of Nations 2008, leaving in the first round. Because of this, he was let go in February 2008.

Tunisia

From 2001 to 2002, Michel coached the Tunisia national team. He was fired after Tunisia was knocked out of the 2002 African Cup of Nations early. They did not score any goals in the tournament.

Ivory Coast

Michel became the coach of the Ivory Coast national team around 2004. He worked with a young team and helped them achieve something amazing. They finished first in their group, ahead of strong teams like Cameroon and Egypt.

This made Ivory Coast qualify for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, a first for the country! In February 2006, they reached the Africa Cup of Nations final. They played well but lost to Egypt in a penalty shootout. At the 2006 World Cup, Ivory Coast played bravely. They lost to Argentina and the Netherlands but won their last match against Serbia & Montenegro 3–2.

Equatorial Guinea

In December 2010, Michel was hired to coach the Equatorial Guinea. They were preparing to co-host the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations. He resigned in October 2011, saying he couldn't get the best players. But he was rehired a few days later. He resigned again in December 2011, stating there was too much outside interference.

Kenya

On August 28, 2012, Michel was named head coach of the Harambee Stars (Kenya's national team). Just four months later, he resigned. He said he couldn't agree on contract terms. The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) was also disappointed with his attitude towards local tournaments.
