Henri Louis Michel was a famous French football player and coach. He was born on October 28, 1947, and passed away on April 24, 2018. Michel was known for his skills as a midfielder, playing for Nantes and the French national team.
After his playing career, he became a successful coach for many teams around the world. He even led the French team to a third-place finish at the 1986 World Cup. He also helped the Olympic squad win a gold medal in the 1984 Olympic Games.

Coaching Career Highlights
Henri Michel had a long and exciting career as a football coach. He managed many different national teams and clubs across the globe.
Coaching France
Michel led the French national team to great success. He guided the team to a gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics. This was a huge achievement for French football.
He also coached France at the 1986 FIFA World Cup. The team played very well, reaching the semi-finals. They finished the tournament in third place, which was an excellent result.
Coaching in Africa
Henri Michel spent a lot of his coaching career in Africa. He managed several national teams there, helping them compete in major tournaments.
Cameroon
In 1994, Michel took on the role of managing the Cameroon national team.
Morocco
Michel coached the Morocco national team twice. His first time was from 1995 to 2000. He returned for a second time in 2007. However, this second period was short. Morocco did not perform well in the Africa Cup of Nations 2008, leaving in the first round. Because of this, he was let go in February 2008.
Tunisia
From 2001 to 2002, Michel coached the Tunisia national team. He was fired after Tunisia was knocked out of the 2002 African Cup of Nations early. They did not score any goals in the tournament.
Ivory Coast
Michel became the coach of the Ivory Coast national team around 2004. He worked with a young team and helped them achieve something amazing. They finished first in their group, ahead of strong teams like Cameroon and Egypt.
This made Ivory Coast qualify for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, a first for the country! In February 2006, they reached the Africa Cup of Nations final. They played well but lost to Egypt in a penalty shootout. At the 2006 World Cup, Ivory Coast played bravely. They lost to Argentina and the Netherlands but won their last match against Serbia & Montenegro 3–2.
Equatorial Guinea
In December 2010, Michel was hired to coach the Equatorial Guinea. They were preparing to co-host the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations. He resigned in October 2011, saying he couldn't get the best players. But he was rehired a few days later. He resigned again in December 2011, stating there was too much outside interference.
Kenya
On August 28, 2012, Michel was named head coach of the Harambee Stars (Kenya's national team). Just four months later, he resigned. He said he couldn't agree on contract terms. The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) was also disappointed with his attitude towards local tournaments.
Coaching Clubs
Besides national teams, Henri Michel also coached several football clubs.
Zamalek
After the 2006 World Cup, he joined the Egyptian club Zamalek. He left in 2007 to return to Morocco. He came back to Zamalek in August 2009 but was fired in November due to poor results.
Mamelodi Sundowns
In 2008, he became the coach of Mamelodi Sundowns in South Africa. He left in March 2009 after facing strong disagreements with fans.
Raja Casablanca
Henri Michel was named manager of Raja de Casablanca in Morocco on June 11, 2010. He also coached them from 2003 to 2004.
Death
Henri Michel passed away on April 24, 2018, at the age of 70.
