Henri Antoine Marie Teissier (born July 21, 1929 – died December 1, 2020) was a special leader in the Catholic Church. He was a French-Algerian Bishop of Algiers and later the Archbishop Emeritus of Algiers. He spent most of his life helping people in Algeria.
A Life of Service in Algeria
Henri Teissier was born in Lyon, France. He became a priest for the Diocese of Algiers on May 24, 1955. In 1972, when he was 43, Pope Paul VI chose him to be the Bishop of Oran. He officially became a bishop on February 2, 1973.
In 1980, he was appointed to work alongside Cardinal Duval in Algiers. Then, in 1988, Cardinal Duval retired, and Teissier became the Archbishop of Algiers.
He had lived in Algeria since 1948 and became an Algerian citizen in 1966. Teissier was very active in building good relationships between different religions. He worked with non-Christians and was involved in many meetings between Christians and Muslims. He also led the Conference of Bishops of North Africa from 1982 to 2004.
Henri Teissier was known for promoting ecumenism, which means working for unity and understanding between different Christian churches and other religions, like Islam. He kept working for peace even when things were very difficult. This included a time between 1994 and 1996 when many religious people were killed. During this time, Bishop Pierre Claverie was killed, and the assassination of the monks of Tibhirine also happened.
Honored for His Work
On May 24, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI accepted Archbishop Teissier's retirement. Father Ghaleb Moussa Abdalla Bader took his place. In 2008, Teissier was given a special award, the Knight of the Legion of Honor. This award recognized his many peaceful and honorable actions.
In 2009, Pope Benedict XVI also named Teissier a member of an important meeting called the Second Special Assembly of the synod for Africa.
