Henry Austin's Baseball Career
Playing for the Elizabeth Resolutes
Henry Austin played in the Major Leagues for just one season, in 1873. He played in all 23 games for his team, the Elizabeth Resolutes. The team didn't win many games, finishing with only 2 wins and 21 losses.
Henry was a key player for his team. He had the most at bats (101) and tied for the most RBIs (11). RBIs are runs that a player helps their team score. He also got 25 hits and scored 10 runs. His batting average was .248, which means he got a hit almost one-quarter of the times he tried to hit the ball.
Playing in the Outfield
As an outfielder, Henry played in both center field and right field. These are positions where players catch balls hit far into the field. He made 15 errors out of 54 chances to make a play. His fielding percentage was .722. This was a bit lower than what was typical for outfielders in his league at that time.
Life After Baseball
After his time playing professional baseball, Henry Austin took on a different important role. He became the Police Commissioner for the city of Elizabeth, New Jersey. This means he was in charge of the police department there.
Henry Austin also served in the American Civil War. He was a soldier in two different New York Infantry Regiments: the 82nd and the 59th New York Infantry Regiment. He passed away at the age of 60 in Amityville, New York.
