Henry Antoun Barakat (Arabic: هنري أنطون بركات) was a very famous Egyptian film director. He was born in Cairo, Egypt, on June 11, 1914. His family had roots in Syria and Lebanon. His father was a doctor who even received a special title from the King for his important work.
Henry Barakat directed many of the most well-known films in Egyptian cinema. He made movies for over 40 years, starting in 1942 and continuing until 1984. He passed away in Cairo on May 27, 1997, at the age of 83.
Henry Barakat's Films
Henry Barakat directed many films that became very popular in Egypt. Some of his early movies include If I Were Rich and The Suspect, both made in 1942. He also directed Little Miss Devil in 1949 and Shore of Love in 1950.
Later, he directed important films like The Nightingale's Prayer (1959) and Hassan and Nayima (1959). He also made There Is a Man in Our House in 1961 and The Open Door in 1963. These films are still remembered today.
Awards and Special Honors
Henry Barakat received several awards and nominations for his amazing work in film.
- He was nominated for the Golden Berlin Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival twice. This was for his films Hassan wa Nayima in 1959 and Doa al karawan in 1960.
- In 1965, his film Haram, El was nominated for the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival. This is a very important award in the film world.
- He won the Best Film award at the Jakarta Film Festival in 1964 for his movie El Bab el maftuh.
- In 1984, he received a Special Mention at the Valencia Festival of Mediterranean Cinema for his film Leilet al quabd al Fatma.
- In 1995, he was given the Egypt State Incentive Prize in Arts and Letters. This is a high honor from the Supreme Council of Culture in Egypt.
