Henry Charlton Bastian (born April 26, 1837, in Truro, Cornwall, England – died November 17, 1915, in Chesham Bois, Buckinghamshire) was an English doctor who studied how the body works (a physiologist) and how the brain and nerves work (a neurologist).

About Henry Charlton Bastian

Henry Bastian was born in Truro, Cornwall. He went to the University of London and finished his studies in 1861. He earned his advanced medical degree (M.D.) in 1866. Because of his important work, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1868 and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1870. These are special honors given to top scientists and doctors.

In 1867, Bastian became a professor at UCL Medical School. He also worked as a doctor there. Later, he became a professor of clinical medicine, which means he taught students about treating patients. In 1868, he started working at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, which helps people with brain and nerve problems. He worked there until he retired in 1912.

Bastian believed in something called archebiosis. This was the idea that living things could spontaneously appear from non-living matter. He thought he saw tiny living organisms forming from non-living stuff when he looked through his microscope. Because of this, he disagreed with the Germ Theory. The Germ Theory says that tiny living things (germs) cause diseases. Bastian's doubts about the Germ Theory meant that this important idea was not accepted as quickly in the UK.
