Henry Chilver (born October 30, 1926 – died July 8, 2012) was a very smart British engineer and politician. He was known for his important work in engineering and for leading many big organizations. He even became a member of the House of Lords, which is part of the UK's Parliament.

Henry Chilver's Early Life and Work
Henry Chilver was born in Barking, Essex, a town in England. He went to Southend High School for Boys. After high school, he studied at the University of Bristol. There, he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1947.
He continued his studies and earned a PhD in Civil Engineering in 1951. Later, in 1962, he received another advanced degree called a DSc. He worked as a teacher, or "lecturer," at the University of Bristol from 1952 to 1954. He also taught at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge from 1958 to 1961.
From 1961 to 1969, he was a special professor of Civil Engineering at University College London. Then, from 1970 to 1989, he was the Vice-Chancellor of Cranfield University. A Vice-Chancellor is like the head or president of a university.
Important Roles and Projects
In the early 1980s, Henry Chilver led a group that looked at how teachers were trained in Northern Ireland. This group wrote a report called the "Chilver Report." He was also the Chairman of the Post Office in the UK for a short time.
In 1983, he became the Chairman of the Milton Keynes Development Corporation (MKDC). This group was in charge of developing the new city of Milton Keynes. He also led other big companies, like English China Clays and RJB Mining. He was also a director at ICI, which is a large chemical company.
Awards and Honors
Henry Chilver received many important awards for his work. In 1977, he became a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. This means he was recognized as a top engineer. In 1982, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society, which is a very old and respected group for scientists.
In 1978, he was made a Knight Bachelor. This meant he could use the title "Sir" before his name. He also received honorary degrees (DScs) from many universities, including the University of Leeds, the University of Bristol, and the University of Bath.
In 1987, he was given a special title called a life peer. This meant he became Baron Chilver. As a Baron, he became a member of the House of Lords, which is one of the two parts of the UK's Parliament. He officially joined the House of Lords on July 15, 1987.
Personal Life
In 1959, Henry Chilver married Dr. Claudia Grigson. They had five children together: Helen, Sarah, John, Mark, and Paul.
