The Henry D. Clayton House is a special old house in Clayton, Alabama. It is famous because it was the home where Henry De Lamar Clayton, Jr. (1857-1929) grew up. He became an important lawmaker and a judge.
Henry D. Clayton, Jr. was known for writing the Clayton Antitrust Act of 1914. This law helped make sure businesses competed fairly. Later, he became a judge and worked to make the court system better. His father, Henry DeLamar Clayton, Sr., who was a general, built the house around 1850. The house was named a National Historic Landmark in 1976.

The Henry D. Clayton House is located about 1 kilometer (1 mile) from the town of Clayton. It sits on a piece of land that was once part of a much larger farm. You can reach the house by driving on the old road that leads from SR 30.
The house is a one-and-a-half story building made of wood. It has a sloped roof and wooden siding. A porch with square posts covers the front of the house. There is also a porch at the back, connected to the kitchen area. Other old buildings on the property include a smokehouse, a barn for carriages, and a small building. Henry Clayton Jr. used this small building as his office.
Who Was Henry D. Clayton Jr.?
Henry D. Clayton, Jr. was born and spent his childhood in this house. He later studied law at the University of Alabama. In 1880, he started his career in politics with the Democratic Party.
Important Work in Congress
As a member of the United States Congress, Henry D. Clayton, Jr. did many important things. In 1910, he led a group that looked into a judge named Robert W. Archbald. This judge was accused of using his position to make money unfairly.
His most famous achievement was helping to pass the Clayton Antitrust Act of 1914. This law was a big change to an older law called the Sherman Antitrust Act. The Clayton Act helped stop unfair business practices. It made sure that companies could not become too powerful and prevent others from competing.
Becoming a Judge
In 1914, Henry D. Clayton, Jr. became a Federal District Judge. As a judge, he was known for wanting to improve the court system. He believed in making justice fair for everyone.
His father, Henry DeLamar Clayton, Sr., was also an important figure. He served as a general in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War.
