Henry Herbert (born in 1617) was a Welsh politician who played a part in the House of Commons of England between 1642 and 1654. He fought for the Parliamentary army during the English Civil War.

Early Life and Education

Henry Herbert was the son of William Herbert from Coldbrook. He started his studies at Magdalen Hall, Oxford on October 10, 1634. In the same year, he also joined Middle Temple, which was a place where people studied to become lawyers.

Fighting in the English Civil War

In March 1642, Henry Herbert was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Monmouthshire. This was during the Long Parliament. He became a colonel in the army that supported Parliament.

Taking Key Cities

As a military leader, Herbert helped capture important cities. In September 1645, he took control of Cardiff. After that, his forces also took Swansea. These were important victories for the Parliamentarian side.

Role in the Commonwealth Government

After the war, Henry Herbert continued to be an important figure. In 1646, he was one of the special representatives for Monmouthshire in Parliament. He played a big role in the new government, known as the Commonwealth.

On June 25, 1651, he was appointed to the High Court of Justice. From November 19, 1651, to November 1652, he was a member of the 4th Council of State. He also joined committees for law and for protecting timber on December 2, 1651.

In March 1654, he was made a Commissioner of Militia for Monmouthshire. This meant he helped organize the local military forces. Later in 1654, he was re-elected as a Member of Parliament for Monmouthshire. This time, it was for the First Protectorate Parliament.

Henry Herbert was given £3000 and the valuable items taken from Raglan Castle. Interestingly, his brother, Major William Herbert, was on the King's side during the war.

Family Life

Henry Herbert married Mary Rudyard. She was the daughter of John Rudyard, a grocer from London. After Henry Herbert passed away, Mary married William Herbert of Cogan as his second wife.
