Sir Henry Hussey (born around 1515 – died 18 August 1557) was an English soldier and politician. He lived during the time of King Henry VIII and his children, Edward VI and Mary I.

Sir Henry Hussey was an important person in England during the 1500s. He was known for his work as a soldier and for serving in the English Parliament.

Early Life and Education

Henry Hussey was the oldest son of Henry Hussey and Eleanor Bradbridge. In 1535, when he was around 20 years old, he started studying law. He attended a famous law school in London called the Inner Temple. This was a place where young men learned how to become lawyers and important government officials.

A Soldier for England

Sir Henry Hussey had an active military career.

  • In 1542, he became a captain in the army. He served under a powerful leader named Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk. They went on a military mission to Scotland.
  • Five years later, in 1547, he joined Edward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somerset. This was during a period known as the Rough Wooing. This was a time when England tried to force Scotland to agree to a marriage between the English King Edward VI and the Scottish Queen Mary.
  • Hussey was part of the Battle of Pinkie in Scotland. This was a big battle where England won.
  • Because of his brave actions in this mission, he was made a knight. This happened on 1 October 1547. Being knighted was a great honor.

Becoming a Politician

After his military service, Sir Henry Hussey became involved in politics.

  • In 1547, he was chosen to be a justice of the peace for Sussex. A justice of the peace was a local official. They helped keep law and order in their area.
  • In the same year, he was elected to the English Parliament. He became a Member of Parliament (MP) for New Shoreham. This likely happened with the support of a powerful nobleman, Henry Fitzalan, 12th Earl of Arundel.
  • Sir Henry Hussey served as an MP for several different towns.

Family Life

On 25 June 1546, Sir Henry Hussey got married. His wife was named Bridget. She was a wealthy woman. Bridget was the daughter of Thomas Spring of Lavenham. She had also been married before to William Erneley.
